John Donne
(1572-1631)

John Donne lived a tragic life. He lost 5 of his 12 children and then finally, the love of his life to childbirth. Donne scorned God for his losses, but never feared death, often mocking it. This is displayed often throughout his poetry and prose. He is known as the father of the metaphysical style of writing. A man of great passion, his soul can be seen through his writings. Here is a sample of his poetry.
