CYCLOTIMIA "Wasteland" Reviews
This cult Moscow band's history began as far back as 1998. Their debut
happened during the first Edge of the Night Party (November 31st, 1998) at the
club "Cry" where the band played harsh industrial, later issued at the local
indie label Grief under the title "Insomnia" (80 copies, CDR). The show
featured a video clip containing scenes of cruel murders and erotica. The
effect on the audience was dramatic: many stood watching the screen with their
eyes wide open. Later, the musicians changed their style a little, favoring a
less cruel ambient sound. In 2000 the German label State Art published
CYCLOTIMIA's limited mini-album "New Death Order" -- industrial-gothic ambient
with harsh mechanical soundscapes and cathedral chants and drums. The band
goes on with the live performances, all accompanied by the video-show, but its
content is already different, mostly revealing their negative attitude to
political and economical policy of the leading capitalistic countries. In 2002
State Art publishes the album "Wasteland", completed by a limited MCD "Alpha
Omega" (sold only together with the album). "Wasteland" is very different from
the previous work. There are no chants or ambient, but altogether the
Wasteland is not deserted. This album depicts the state of the contemporary
world: cold walls of low-cost apartments, offices' glass, faceless crowds of
bossy people and cars, gigantic plants and factories exhaling exhaust fumes
and smog that covers the sky by its gray veil. It's a separated view upon the
surrounding - somewhere with lots of people and not a single person. The
following "Alpha Omega" develops its theme in the future - drawing a picture
of the city of the future, where the majority of citizens are robots.
Besides, CYCLOTIMIA published two more vinyls in 2002 - 'Same Time Same Place'
at Bladerecords and 'Metamorphosis' at the local label Indiestate.
