In contrast to the band's debut album issued by the Moscow label Irond, the
new EP has been released by the band itself, while Irond only distributed it.
I do not know the reasons of such step - maybe the band was not satisfied by
the first album promotion quality? But neither do I understand the very idea
of this EP release. In my opinion, STILLIFE is the best Russian gothic band,
and that's why we invite them every year to perform at the "Edge of the Night"
Halloween party. At Edge of the Night they performed on the same stage with
DIARY OF DREAMS and ENDRAUM, and it's with the latter that I'd like to draw
analogies. Indeed, the mood and sound of STILLIFE is closest to the classics
of german romantic darkwave, although there's no copying here, STILLIFE's
material is unique and their sound is more variable due to use of live violin.
I've already mentioned my not understanding of this EP release and it's really
so: such flowing melancholic music sounds great as an album, not a five-song
compilation. Maybe the band considers the songs too different from each other
to include them in one album? There's only one real hit, "Only Silence",
compared to which all the rest of the songs sound worse. The dark-trip-wave
track "So Leicht zu Glauben" is good but not a hit, the cover of PENITENT's
"Necropolis" is no masterpiece either, the remix of "Nur Das Schweigen" by SAL
SOLARIS is in my opinion worse than the original. The song "Nevermore" would
sound better on a full-time album. Anyway, it's a strange result, although you
have to bear in mind that STILLIFE's "non-masterpiece" is much better than the
works of 90% of local gothic bands.
